Ingredients
For the Cake
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar

½ tsp salt
1 cup butter
1 cup water
4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
½ cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Frosting
½ cup butter
4 tbsp cocoa powder
6 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
3½ cups powdered sugar
1 cup chopped pecans, optional
Step by Step
Preheat: Heat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large sheet pan.
Mix dry ingredients: Combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt.
Make chocolate mixture: Heat butter, water and cocoa powder in a saucepan until smooth.
Combine: Pour the warm chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, eggs and vanilla. Mix until just combined.
Bake: Spread the batter evenly in the pan and bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Make frosting: While the cake bakes, heat butter, cocoa powder and milk. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla and powdered sugar.
Frost immediately: Pour the warm frosting over the hot cake and spread quickly.
Add pecans: Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top if desired.
Cool & serve: Let the cake cool and allow the frosting to set before slicing.
Pinterest Tip
For the classic Texas Sheet Cake texture, don't overbake it. The cake should remain soft and moist underneath the fudgy chocolate frosting.
