Easy Homemade Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

Tzatziki is a cool, creamy Greek yogurt and cucumber sauce that works beautifully as a dip, sandwich spread or topping for gyros, grilled chicken, kebabs, roasted vegetables and pita. The key to thick tzatziki is removing as much liquid as possible from the grated cucumber.

Ingredients

1 cup plain Greek yogurt

½ English cucumber, grated

1–2 garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped

½ teaspoon salt

Black pepper, to taste

How to Make Tzatziki

1. Grate the cucumber

Grate the cucumber using the large holes of a box grater.

2. Remove excess water

Place the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen towel or fine strainer and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. This prevents watery tzatziki.

3. Mix the ingredients

Add Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, dill, salt and pepper to a bowl. Stir until creamy and well combined.

4. Chill

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Chilling allows the garlic, herbs, lemon and cucumber flavors to blend.

5. Serve

Drizzle with a little olive oil and garnish with fresh dill. Serve with warm pita, fresh vegetables, gyros, grilled chicken, kebabs or as a sandwich spread.

 Pinterest-Friendly Tips

Use thick Greek yogurt for a creamier sauce.

Don't skip squeezing the cucumber.

For stronger garlic flavor, add another clove.

Make it ahead and refrigerate before serving for better flavor.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within a few days for best quality.
